Russia slams US for recognizing Syrian opposition

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia has criticized Washington's decision to recognize Syria's main opposition group as the country's legitimate representative saying the move is a violation of earlier accords.

President Barack Obama said Tuesday the newly-formed Syrian Opposition Council "is now inclusive enough" to be granted the elevated status and deemed his move "a big step" in the international diplomatic efforts to end Syrian President Bashar Assad's embattled regime. Recognition of the council as the sole representative of Syria's diverse population brings the U.S. in line with Britain, France and several of America's Arab allies.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Wednesday the recognition contradicted earlier international agreements that foresee the "commencement of an all-Syria dialogue" that would include all sides of the conflict that killed more than 40,000 people.

Syria Fires Scud Missiles at Insurgents, U.S. Says

WASHINGTON — Syrian forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad have fired Scud missiles at rebel fighters in recent days, Obama administration officials said on Wednesday.

The move represents a significant escalation in the fighting, which has already killed more than 40,000 civilians in a nearly two-year-old conflict that has threatened to destabilize the Middle East, and suggests increased desperation on the part of the Assad government.

One American official, who asked not to be identified because he was discussing classified information, said that missiles had been fired from the Damascus area at targets in northern Syria.

“The total is number is probably north of six now,” said another American official, adding that the targets were in areas controlled by the Free Syrian Army, the main armed insurgent group.

It is not clear how many casualties resulted from the attacks by the Scuds — a class of Soviet-era missiles made famous by Saddam Hussein of Iraq during the first Persian Gulf war. But it appeared to be the first time that the Assad government had fired the missiles at targets inside Syria.

American officials did not say how they had monitored the missile firings, but American intelligence has been closely following developments in Syria through aerial surveillance and other methods, partly out of concern that Mr. Assad may resort to the use of chemical weapons in the conflict.

The Obama administration views the Assad government’s use of Scud missiles as a “significant escalation” of the conflict, said a senior official. It also shows, he said, the increasing pressure on Mr. Assad, since Scuds are primarily defensive weapons, being used by the government offensively against a counterinsurgency.

“Using Scuds to target tanks or military bases is one thing,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Using them to target rebels hiding in playgrounds at schools is something else.”

Among other repercussions the Obama administration fears is the possibility that Mr. Assad’s military could fire Scuds near, or over, the border with Turkey, which has become one of the Syrian president’s most ardent foes. That could result in Turkey firing its Patriot antimissile batteries, the administration official said.

Military experts said that move might reflect the Assad government’s worries that its aircraft have been vulnerable to rebel air defenses. In recent weeks, rebel forces have captured Syrian military bases, seized air-defense weapons and used some of them to fire at Syria warplanes. But one expert said that the government may have decided to use large missiles in order to wipe out military bases — and the arsenals they hold — that had been taken over by the opposition.

The Obama administration has yet to comment publicly on the missile attacks, but a senior administration official alluded to the development in a briefing for reporters on Tuesday.

“The Syrian regime has used aircraft,” the administration official said. “It has used artillery, and it appears that it has even used missile to attack the Syrian population and to attack what was a peaceful protest movement.”

There have been other indications of Syrian government use of missiles. The Local Coordinating Committees, an antigovernment activist network in Syria, reported from its Damascus office in an e-mail late Tuesday that “Regime forces are firing land missiles that are capable of carrying chemical warheads.” The group did not elaborate on what the missiles were or where the information had originated.

The developments came as representatives of more than 100 countries and organizations that support the anti-Assad movement met in Morocco and endorsed a newly formed insurgent coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people. President Obama formally acknowledged that coalition, known as the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, in an interview on Tuesday with ABC News.

But the leader of the coalition took issue with a decision by the Obama administration to classify Al Nusra Front — one of several armed groups fighting Mr. Assad — as a foreign terrorist organization and urged the United States to review that decision.

The coalition leader, Sheik Ahmad Moaz al-Khatib, said, “The logic under which we consider one of the parts that fights against the Assad regime is a terrorist organization is a logic one must reconsider.”

He also said: “We love our country. We can differ with parties that adopt political ideas and visions different from ours. But we ensure that the goal of all rebels is the fall of the regime.”

He was speaking after the Moroccan organizers of the conference said a declaration recognizing the new coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people had been adopted by the 114 representatives at the gathering. News reports said the draft declaration adopted by the meeting also called on Mr. Assad to “stand aside” to permit a “sustainable political transition” after the months of revolt and bloodshed that have claimed tens of thousands of lives and sent hundreds of thousands of Syrians fleeing into neighboring countries.

The document also warned against any use by government forces of chemical or biological weapons, saying such action would be met by a “serious response.” The Syrian authorities have denied that they will use chemical weapons against their own people.

Reporting was contributed by Mark Landler from Washington; Aida Alami from Marrakesh, Morocco; Alan Cowell from London; and Anne Barnard from Beirut, Lebanon.

Russia acknowledges Assad losing control in Syria

Syrian rebels are gaining ground and might win, Russia’s deputy foreign minister said on Thursday, in the starkest such admission from a major ally of President Bashar al-Assad.

“One must look the facts in the face,” Russia’s state-run RIA quoted Mikhail Bogdanov as saying. “Unfortunately, the victory of the Syrian opposition cannot be ruled out.”

Mr. Bogdanov, who is Kremlin’s special envoy for Middle East affairs, said the Syrian government was “losing control of more and more territory” and that Moscow was preparing plans to evacuate Russian citizens if necessary.

Advancing rebels now hold an almost continuous arc of territory from the east to the southeast of Damascus, despite fierce army bombardments designed to drive them back.

A car bomb killed at least 16 men, women and children in Qatana, a town about 25 kilometres southwest of Damascus where many soldiers live, activists and state media said.

The explosion occurred in a residential area for soldiers in Qatana, which is near several army bases, said Rami Abdelrahman, head of the pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

He put the death toll as 17, including seven children and two women. State news agency SANA said 16 people had died.

State television blamed the blast on “terrorists” - its term for rebels - and showed footage of soldiers walking by a partly collapsed building, with rubble and twisted metal on the road.

The attack follows three bombs at the Interior Ministry on Wednesday evening, in which state news agency SANA said five people were killed, including Abdullah Kayrouz, a member of parliament from the Syrian Social Nationalist Party.

Apart from gaining territory in the outskirts of Damascus in recent weeks, rebels have also made hit-and-run attacks or set off bombs within the capital, often targeting state security buildings or areas seen as loyal to Mr. Assad, such as Jaramana, where twin bombs killed 34 people in November.

Insurgents launched an offensive on Damascus after a July 18 bombing that killed four of Mr. Assad’s closest aides, including his feared brother-in-law Assef Shawkat, but were later pushed back.

With his back to the wall, Mr. Assad is reported to be turning ever deadlier weapons on his adversaries.

U.S. NATO officials said on Wednesday that the Syrian military had fired Scud-style ballistic missiles, which are powerful but not very accurate, against rebels in recent days.

Human Rights Watch said some populated areas had been hit by incendiary bombs, containing flammable materials such as napalm, thermite or white phosphorous, which can set fire to buildings or cause severe burns and respiratory damage.

The British-based Syrian Observatory said war planes were bombing rebel-held eastern suburbs of Damascus on Thursday and artillery was hitting Daraya and Moadamiyeh, southwestern areas near the centre where rebels have been fighting for a foothold.

At least 40,000 people have been killed in Syria’s uprising, which started in March 2011 with street protests which were met with gunfire by Mr. Assad’s security forces, and which spiralled into the most enduring and destructive of the Arab revolts.

The United States, European powers and Arab states bestowed their official blessing on Syria’s newly-formed opposition coalition on Wednesday, despite increasing signs of Western unease at the rise of militant Islamists in the rebel ranks.

Western nations at “Friends of Syria” talks in Marrakech, Morocco rallied around a new opposition National Coalition formed last month under moderate Islamist cleric Mouaz Alkhatib.

Russia, which along with China has blocked any UN Security Council measures against Mr. Assad, criticized Washington’s decision to grant the coalition formal recognition, saying it appeared to have abandoned any effort to reach a political solution.

Mr. Bogdanov’s remarks were the clearest sign yet that Russia is preparing for the possible defeat of Mr. Assad’s government.

“We are dealing with issues of preparations for an evacuation. We have mobilization plans and are clarifying where our citizens are located,” Mr. Bogdanov said.

Israel: No proof chemical weapon was used in Syria

By NBC News staff and wire reports

JERUSALEM - Israel voiced doubt on Tuesday about claims that chemical weapons had been used against rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad.

Activists on Monday claimed civilians had suffered injuries consistent with exposure to some kind of poisonous gas.

"We have seen reports from the opposition. It is not the first time. The opposition has an interest in drawing in international military intervention," Vice Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon said on Army Radio.

"As things stand now, we do not have any confirmation or proof that (chemical weapons) have already been used, but we are definitely following events with concern," he said.

Syria activists: Several die after Assad's forces use 'poisonous gases'

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights gathered activist accounts on Sunday of what they said was a poison gas attack in the city of Homs. The reports are difficult to verify, as the government restricts media access in Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights gathered activist accounts on Sunday of what they said was a poison gas attack in the city of Homs. The reports are difficult to verify, as the government restricts media access in Syria.

The Observatory, a British-based group with a network of activists across Syria, said those accounts spoke of six rebel fighters who died after inhaling smoke on the front line of Homs's urban battleground. It said it could not confirm that poison gas had been used and called for an investigation.

Syria has said it would never use chemical weapons against its citizens.

Asked about images purported to show patients being treated for possible gas poisoning, Yaalon said: "I'm not sure that what we're seeing in the photos is the result of the use of chemical weapons.

"It could be other things," he said, without elaborating.

On Sunday, senior Israeli defense official Amos Gilad said Syria's chemical weapons were still secure despite the fact that Assad had lost control of parts of the country.

As Syria's southern neighbor, Israel has been concerned about chemical weapons falling into the hands of Islamist militants or Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, cautioning it could intervene to stop such developments.

Earlier this month, President Barack Obama warned Assad that the use of chemical weapons by his regime would be "totally unacceptable.""If you make the tragic mistake of using these weapons there will be consequences and you will be held accountable," he said.

Tanque en llamas

Mensaje por dragoncanada el Sáb Feb 02, 2013 9:37 am

Explicación detallada del tanque en llamas:

Let's return to our original analysis of the plot. And so, as we see from the very first frame, outside the city, in a very dense high-rise building, there are three government of the T-72M1. The tanks are not equipped with modern sighting optics, have a dynamic, or any other additional security. These tanks are virtually obsolete by the mid-1980s.

Order of battle as a whole is built correctly: two tanks, standing shoulder, control the street, third, closing his stern building, controls the street in the opposite direction. However, it is possible it's bad - track from under armor obsolete through the optics of the foot terrorists armed with portable antitank weapons, it is very difficult, in fact impossible. Combat experience in a city requires joint action of infantry and armored vehicles. In this armor inhibits identified pockets of resistance, and the infantry makes cleaning and, in turn, covers armor. In this case, the Corps apparently broke away from the tanks and moved forward. As a sad result, the destruction of one of the tanks with the most vulnerable areas of feed. Hit by a missile, fire combat pack. At the time of the explosion, the affected tank will fire (which gave rise to an illiterate innuendo "Russia 24"). Saved only one member of the crew - gunner ejected through a hatch gases from the combustion of the explosive charges. Man is very lucky!

A detailed analysis, some panelists initially assumed that this person is not a member of the crew, and a suicide by throwing himself under a tank, but this version was soon disproved, and below we detail to see this. Issues is the place of impact. For one, I should say, erroneous version was hit in the side of the tower. On the second - in the side of the hull in the area of the fuel tanks. The third - in the rear of the hull of the tank. That in turn led to a couple of questions:

* First - if you hit the rear of the hull, then how is it that immediately caught fire combat pack in the fighting compartment? Is the engine provides shielding and protection?
* The second - the shot? Cited as versions of the SPG-9 and RPG-29 "Vampire."

We begin to understand. HD video quality allows us to make enough quality screenshots. At first we see flying up to the tank with a stern "object."

Its form is to determine the trajectory and point of contact.

As can be clearly seen, have not hit the tower (near the turret) as some forgers, and about the upper-left corner of the sheet feed. Zoom in, and try to identify the object:

As a result of the special image processing software, it is quite easy to read as a shot RPG-29 "Vampire." Very characteristic silhouette, clearly visible leading tandem shaped charge warhead. This is not just a serious and very serious thing! Recall that in the mid 2000's "Vampires" was very successfully used by Iraqi insurgents against U.S. forces. At this point there was a even a very interesting video.

In 2006, during an operation against forces in Lebanon, Israeli tanks "Merkava", including the most advanced modification Mk.4, began to bear substantial losses from portable anti-tank weapons. In the subsequent "debriefing" performed quite professionally and meticulously Israeli history lovers armored vehicles, it became clear that most of the losses and damages "Merkava" carried from ATGM. However, in this case, it is surprising howl raised in the press statements by Israeli officials. Israeli Internal Security Minister Avi Dichter, and after him, and Defense Minister Amir Peretz, said that in the fighting in southern Lebanon, "Hezbollah" is using modern anti-tank produced in Russia and, in particular, the RPG-29. There is significant that was isolated and named this sample PTAs. Finally, in 2007, the same Iraq, an RPG-29 was broken front armor hull British tank "Challenger-2."

The driver took off with three toes were injured and two other members of the crew of the tank. So there is nothing surprising in the defeat of "old man" T-72M1 this powerful RPG not. In the next screenshot, we see him leading the charge drawdown tandem warhead (2).
After a moment, should be the main burst (1).

Probably hatch gunner on the affected T-72 was not completely closed and secure. The explosion of the main charge to open it, and we see the flash rips through the open hatch. At the same time we see a sheaf of flames escaping from a broken stern. Almost simultaneously with the explosion of the shot from the gun of the tank. Perhaps it was at that time charged and ready to fire. At the moment of impact the RPG gunner inadvertently pulled the trigger, or may have been some unintended circuit wiring, because immediately after the shot is observed failure of the stabilizer arms with electro-hydraulic drive - gun free swinging up and down, which speaks volumes about the damaged hydraulic and cable routes. From start to burn explosion RPG charges, are behind the gunner in motor bulkhead. The fact that the gunner was killed on the spot, shows that the power of the RPG-29 was barely enough to break 45 mm aft of the tank, to go through the procurement and overcome the small motor bulkhead. To understand the trajectory of the projectile inside MTO and the fact why the engine is not screened fighting compartment, look at the chart:

On them we tried to visually reconstruct what happened as a defeat. It is seen that the jet stream engine literally touched on a tangent, from the edge, catching the edge of covers cylinder heads, and before that took place along the radiator. Shot obviously high-class professional and methyl he was not in the stern - the moment just below the rocket and the engine would not let her hit the styling found in the fighting compartment. Pointed at a very vulnerable aft turret.

THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE VERSION

Some experts argue that whether the tank is equipped with modern high-speed system, middleware, such as "Frost", the fire could have been prevented. Unfortunately it is not. No CSPs can not repay the cumulative jet and especially the illuminated charges. The latter do not add water, do not put out any foam or powder, or an inert gas. Isolation from atmospheric oxygen will not help because the oxidizer is already part of the charge. If the charge is fired up - all - burning has not stopped. But as far as the spread of fire in the MTO, we just observe that the spread of fire in the MTO does not, maybe the staff worked PPO. In subsequent frames visible weak chadyaschie smoke, rising slowly through the radiators - a consequence of thermal treatment and combustion HEAT warhead charges in BW, but no more.

Now for the truly miraculous escape gunner. Hard to tell what state it was in when the actual explosion. Most likely he was wounded and lost consciousness. Carefully watching developments, we see that the charges broke out at once, but gradually flared. Few moments after the explosion does not happen anything, but then the explosion of the wide-open hatch starts fell smoke. Gas pressure inside the crew compartment is growing - the charges erupted one after another, and then we see a strong pillar of flame. But until then, people no attempt to leave the burning car - can not see what he was trying to climb out on their own through the hatch. In contrast, the HR promatyvaya record shows that his body falls to the ground somewhere in the 13 seconds clip, while the burning of the charge just passed the maximum stage.

The flow of hot gases it simply kicked through the hatch. However, his clothes torn and naddulo tatters. Ripped shoes, tearing leg, the remains of which are hanging only by a belt at the waist. Batten down the jacket and pulled up on the wrong side. By the way, in consequence, we see that the man surely lifted from the ground and has a very reasonable, in any case continue to navigate the space. So he has not lost sight! More importantly, while in the "fireball" he swallowed the hot air to the lungs - it would be almost instant death. In our opinion, all of this happened because of Zadran up jacket, which saved the eyes and respiratory system. In the next screenshot, clearly visible through the opened door gunner who continues to break out the weakened flame. We see that the flames burst out just aft of the tank through a hole punched precharge. It is evident that the man lies on his back along the tank down aft. Such a situation can not be the case if the person knowingly

jumps to the ground, except when he left the door rolls on armor and falls "sack" on the ground. But in the latter case, he would be right next to the tank in the tower and was not visible to us. Described above and also refutes allegations of Action - "kamikaze".

Surprisingly, he found himself on the ground, our heroic spotter the hour comes to himself, to his feet. His legs and body badly burned - literally black from burns. Surely he felt a terrible pain shock, but as mentioned above, is valid in this case deliberately. He understands that it is small arms fire - ruthless terrorists want to finish it, maybe he sees where is the fire. Rapidly rising and dropping his hands (otherwise jacket will hurt the burnt body) runs around the tank, hiding in a building which has a tank number 3, in which it will be possible to feel protected by his comrades in arms.

In the wake him continue to be heard gunshots, bullets beat against the pillar of the building, close to where he just ran.

Unfortunately, on this record is dropped. We do not know what happened next, as further events developed. Probably operator militant terrorist and his band of murderers had quickly lam from the scene. We do not know what happened to our hero. Burns are a very tricky thing - death can occur immediately, but after 4-6 days. But let us hope that the unnamed gunner T-72 a strong man, that luck will continue to favor the hero and he can vykarabkatsya.Pozhelaem him to survive, and the people of Syria to win!
